The great thing about birch ply canoes is that they are incredibly light compared with fibreglass or polythene canoes, and can easily be lifted onto the roof rack of most cars.

Sea Otter 2 on car outside our workshop

Here is Sea Otter 2 on my car, strapped down in the middle, and with a restraining rope front and back. You can see my workshop in the background, with Sea Otter 3 in the making..

Sea Otter 2 weighs around 28 kg, and can  be carried around on the shoulder yoke which forms the middle thwart. Ease of portage is important in England, where you often find the waterways obstructed by locks, shallows  or  rapids.  Being able to put your boat into inaccessible rivers makes it fun too..

We have a lovely old fibreglass Huron canoe which weighs nearly twice as much, and can only be lifted onto the roof by two people.

Here's a shot of me taken by Thomas this morning, intended to show you how light these boats are to carry around.
